Pillar 3: Businesses

Empowering business to
grow the circular economy

99% of London’s businesses are small or medium‑sized. This makes our work with start-ups and small businesses critical to support circular business models and mobilise change in the capital.

Our business transformation programme’s funding from the European Regional Development Fund came to an end in 2023. However, the team has since been successfully re-financed through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

We saw strong growth in the number of businesses we supported during the 2023-24 year. This included expanding our services to support high street businesses, through our High Streets Beyond Waste programme.

Facilitating positive connections

We introduce innovative circular businesses to investors and public sector organisations who want to build a greener, more circular city.

This matchmaking offer grew during 2023-24, especially between innovators and boroughs, or other public sector organisations. Much of this was made possible by additional funding through London and Partners and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Importantly, we’re also seeing greater diversity in the leadership of the businesses we support. The number of minority-led businesses has doubled in the last year, and we’ve seen an increase in businesses founded and led by women or non-binary people.
