The built environment sector is responsible for 59% of UK waste and over half of London’s waste, whilst consuming vast quantities of virgin raw materials. Material re-use tonnage declined by 25% between 1998 and 2007.
The circular economy looks to increase material utilisation and develop products that are regenerative by design. There are exemplar projects in the built environment that have demonstrated what is possible. However, the roll-out and scaling up of new solutions remain inhibited by a host of external factors.
ReLondon’s Re-usable Buildings Pathfinder project (funded by Climate-KIC) set out to explore the possibilities of addressing these factors, particularly those related to building a compelling business case for change.
This report summarises the outcomes and conclusions of the project. There are questions throughout to provoke thought and discussion.
